Popular later life mortgage options

Capital & interest mortgage (repayment)

Requires monthly payments towards the loan and the interest, reducing the debt over time. A consistent income into retirement is necessary in order to afford the payments for the duration of the mortgage term.

Retirement Interest-Only mortgage (RIO)

Monthly payments to cover the interest only. The debt remains the same and must be repaid in full when you pass away or move into long-term care. Any remaining equity once the property has been sold could be inherited.

Equity release (lifetime mortgage)

Equity release mortgages provide a lump sum or additional regular income with no monthly payments required, but interest builds up the longer you have the loan. The debt plus interest must be paid off when you pass away or move into long-term care.
